Boot or shoe?

Describing the key elements of boot design and production.

What is a shoe? The definition in its simplest form is ‘a covering for the foot, having a sturdy sole, not reaching above the ankle and which protects from external conditions’. According to one reference work, the earliest known shoes – now several thousand years old – were sandals made from sagebrush bark, found in the USA. By contrast, boots cover the foot and ankle and can extend to the lower leg. There are even some boots that will protect the entire leg from the hip downwards. Most boots come with a heel, although some are flat – such as certain well-known sheepskin boots or snow boots.
