Understanding leather production – part 3

Reviewing potential quality problems that can occur on the farm and in the time between slaughter and when the tanner starts production.

The majority of hides and skins are a valuable by-product of the closely-linked meat, dairy and textile industries. The value of the hide is greater if the animals in life are well cared for, and this is a very positive aspect of leather production. Animal welfare is, without doubt, linked to the quality of the subsequent hide.
