Italy puts plastic packaging tax on hold

The Italian authorities have confirmed the suspension of its plastic packaging tax until further notice. This levy of EUR 450 per tonne on virgin single-use products was due to be introduced on 1st January 2023 in order to reduce both the production and consumption of single-use plastic products.

While footwear packaging does not typically involve much plastic, this tax – which exempts compostable single-use plastics – may ultimately affect companies that use such items as plastic hangers or ship casual footwear from factories in clear plastic bags.

The photograph above illustrates the use of plastic hangers, which may soon be taxed in Italy.
