The Footwear Technology Centre of Portugal (CTCP) is coordinating a project involving 45 Portuguese organisations to develop what is being called ‘the intelligent factory of the future’. The ‘FAIST’ project – which aims to help factories become more agile, intelligent, sustainable and technological – will reportedly involve an investment of EUR 50 million under a ‘Recovery and Resiliency Plan’. According to project coordinator, Florbela Silva, this strategy intends to provide and empower the Portuguese footwear industry with innovative technologies, processes and sustainable materials. It also hopes to increase the responsiveness to market demands and help to make the Portuguese footwear and leathergoods industry ‘the most modern in the world’.

The consortium consists of 44 co-promoters, which include 14 footwear and leathergoods producers, nine component suppliers, 15 technology companies and six associative scientific entities. In order to make the sector more agile and competitive, investment is to be made to develop robotised and automated production processes, management software and production control. The plan calls for these goals to be achieved in parallel with the development and production of new types of sustainable and ecological products.
