Manufacturers hope to build worker housing

In a move which may affect footwear manufacturers, the Ho Chi Minh City Real Estate Association (HoREA) in Vietnam has provided feedback to the prime minister on draft policies aimed at developing social housing. HoREA has proposed a law change to allow companies in industrial parks to develop dormitory housing for their workers. The association also called for employers to be given permission to rent social housing or worker dormitories outside industrial parks.
According to HoREA chairman Le Hoang Chau, there are no regulations in place which allow enterprises to either rent social housing outside industrial parks or to build their own dormitories. He added that while the demand for worker housing is rising, there are still constraints on the supply of accommodation, and commercial housing stock is often unaffordable. HoREA is encouraging the Vietnamese government to support manufacturers, so that they can take an active role in resolving housing issues.
The association has also asked that the government considers offering financial support packages which include preferential loans, reciprocal mechanisms and tax incentives to ease companies’ financial burdens.
