Mixed fortunes for Chinese exports

Volume rose but value declined during the first five months of 2025,

Figures released by the China Leather Industry Association (CLIA) indicate that the nation’s footwear producers exported 3.7 billion pairs of shoes between January and May of this year. This represents an increase of 0.8 per cent compared to the same period of 2024. These sales have reportedly generated export revenue of USD 17.6 billion (GBP 13.1 billion) – a drop of 7.9 per cent when compared to the first five months of last year.

Within this total, 200 million pairs of leather shoes were exported during this five-month period, which had a value of more than USD 2.8 billion (GBP 2.1 billion). This is a growth of 1 per cent in volume but a 3.9 per cent decline in value year-on-year. The CLIA has also advised that imports of footwear into China dropped between January and May 2025. Seventy million pairs were shipped into the country during this period, having a value of more than USD 2.1 billion (GBP 1.6 billion). These figures are said to represent decreases of 11.6 per cent in volume and of 10.9 per cent in value.
