Brazil pushing sustainable footwear

The Brazilian Footwear Industries Association (Abicalçados) and Assintecal – the country’s Association of Leather, Footwear and Accessories Components Companies – have launched a campaign to emphasise how its footwear sector is committed to environmental, social and governance (ESG) practices.

The campaign is said to go ‘behind the scenes’ to show that sustainable choice is available in often invisible details that make an important difference, such as appreciation of communities, employee care, management commitment and reduction of environmental impacts.

The Brazil Footwear Industry Report for 2025, which covers almost 60 per cent of Brazilian production, states that the share of manufacturers using only renewable electricity rose from 47 per cent in 2021 to 83 per cent in 2024. In addition, almost three-quarters of footwear companies claimed that they conduct periodic audits of their suppliers to ensure environmental, legal and social compliance.
