Why members choose SATRA

Explaining how more than a century of research, technical expertise and industry collaboration continues to be used to support the global footwear industry.

by Simon Renshaw

The footwear industry has never stood still. Materials continue to evolve, manufacturing techniques become more sophisticated, sustainability expectations increase, regulations change and consumers demand ever higher levels of quality, comfort and performance. Against this backdrop, businesses are expected to develop products more quickly while reducing risk and maintaining confidence throughout increasingly complex global supply chains.

Meeting these challenges requires more than testing alone. It requires access to independent technical expertise, practical experience and trusted guidance that helps companies to make informed decisions throughout the lifecycle of their products.

For more than 100 years, SATRA has worked alongside footwear brand owners, manufacturers, material suppliers, retailers and sourcing organisations to provide exactly that. While many companies first become familiar with SATRA through its testing laboratories, membership offers access to a much broader range of technical knowledge, research, consultancy, training and industry support.

This breadth of expertise is one of the reasons why organisations across more than 70 countries continue to choose SATRA as their technical partner.

Supporting the entire footwear supply chain

Every stage of footwear development presents its own technical challenges. Material suppliers need to demonstrate performance, manufacturers seek stable production processes and brand owners require confidence in product quality, while retailers need assurance that products entering the marketplace meet both consumer expectations and legislative requirements.

SATRA supports each part of this supply chain through a combination of scientific research, technical consultancy and practical industry experience. Members include material and component suppliers, tanneries, footwear manufacturers, sourcing companies, importers, exporters, designers, distributors, wholesalers, brand owners and retailers – each benefiting from expertise which can be tailored to their own requirements.

As a research and technology organisation, SATRA continually reinvests in developing new services, research programmes and technical knowledge for the benefit of its members. This long-term investment has contributed to many of the materials, test methods, equipment and manufacturing processes now widely used throughout the footwear industry.

Research that shapes the industry

As previously mentioned, many people know SATRA for testing, but fewer appreciate the role it has played in developing the technical foundations upon which much of today’s footwear industry relies.

SATRA’s scientists and technologists have developed numerous test methods and performance guidelines to assess the suitability of materials, components and finished footwear for their intended application. These methods have helped businesses to evaluate quality with greater consistency, while providing a common language for manufacturers, suppliers and buyers around the world.

A significant proportion of the footwear testing equipment used throughout the industry was originally developed by SATRA

Over time, many SATRA test methods have been adopted, adapted or referenced within national and international standards. Likewise, a significant proportion of the footwear testing equipment used throughout the industry was originally developed by SATRA, enabling manufacturers and laboratories worldwide to assess product performance using robust and repeatable techniques.

Continuous research ensures that these methods evolve alongside changes in materials, manufacturing processes, consumer expectations and legislation. This helps members to remain aligned with current industry requirements rather than relying on outdated practices.

More than generating test results

Independent testing remains fundamental to product development and quality assurance. ISO/IEC 17025 accredited laboratories provide confidence that testing has been carried out to internationally recognised standards and that results are technically reliable. However, generating a test result is only part of the process.

Understanding what that result means, whether it reflects the intended end use of the product and how it can be used to improve performance often requires specialist knowledge developed over many years. This is where SATRA provides a different perspective.

Rather than simply issuing reports, SATRA’s technologists work with members to interpret results, explain the significance of failures, identify root causes and recommend practical solutions. Whether assessing a material, validating a new construction, investigating product failures or evaluating long-term durability, the objective is not simply to determine whether a product passes or fails, but to help members be able to make better technical decisions.

For many organisations, this technical interpretation becomes as valuable as the testing itself.

From product development to production

Technical expertise is most effective when applied early. Members frequently engage with SATRA during the product development process to evaluate materials, review constructions, establish performance specifications and identify potential risks before production begins.

By understanding how materials interact, how products are likely to perform in service and where improvements can be made, companies can reduce costly redesigns, minimise product failures and improve confidence before their goods reach the marketplace.

This same expertise continues throughout manufacture, where SATRA consultants provide support ranging from factory evaluations and quality improvement programmes to technical troubleshooting and supplier development. The result is a continuous thread of technical support, from concept through to finished product.

Supporting manufacturing excellence

Consistent manufacturing is essential to producing footwear that performs reliably in service. SATRA’s factory services help manufacturers to improve technical capability, strengthen quality systems and demonstrate their commitment to best practice.

These services include laboratory accreditation, leather grading, cutter training, quality auditing and technical consultancy, all of which work together with the SATRA Technical Compliance Scheme to provide an independent assessment of key manufacturing processes, technical capability and factory management.

Such programmes benefit not only manufacturers seeking to improve performance, but also brand owners and sourcing companies looking for greater confidence within their supply chains.

In addition, SATRA continues to support manufacturers transitioning towards more sustainable production techniques. These include projects involving water-based adhesives and initiatives aimed at reducing volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions while maintaining product quality.

Improving efficiency through technology

Technical performance extends beyond product quality. Efficient manufacturing, effective material utilisation and stable production processes in the factory all contribute to improved competitiveness and sustainability.

SATRA has developed a range of specialist production efficiency systems that help manufacturers optimise these areas.

SATRASumm assists companies in improving material utilisation and reducing waste. SATRA TimeLine helps to predict labour requirements and manufacturing costs, enabling more effective production planning. SATRA VisionStitch supports consistent stitching quality by monitoring and improving stitching processes throughout manufacture.

These systems complement SATRA’s consultancy services by helping manufacturers to increase productivity, improve consistency and reduce unnecessary costs.

Sharing knowledge across the industry

One of the greatest strengths of SATRA membership is access to technical knowledge which has been accumulated over more than a century of research and practical experience.

This knowledge is shared through a wide range of publications, webinars, seminars, workshops, technical meetings and digital resources, ensuring members remain informed about emerging technologies, evolving legislation and changing industry requirements.

SATRA Bulletin continues to provide practical technical articles, industry news and research updates, while the Knowledge Hub offers access to technical publications, guidance documents and specialist information covering every aspect of footwear development and manufacture.

Members also benefit from regular Restricted Substances List (RSL) updates, helping them to remain informed about changes in chemical legislation and compliance requirements affecting international markets.

Developing technical capability

Technical knowledge becomes most valuable when it is shared. SATRA provides a comprehensive programme of training designed to support everyone within the industry – from new entrants to experienced footwear professionals.

The internationally recognised SATRA Accredited Footwear Technologist (SAFT) programme provides in-depth training across key aspects of footwear technology, materials, manufacturing and quality assurance. This equips delegates with practical knowledge that can be applied immediately within their own organisations.

Alongside SAFT, SATRA delivers specialist courses covering such topics as leather, fitting, sustainability and bespoke technical subjects tailored to an individual company’s requirements.

More recently, the Footwear Foundations course has provided flexible online learning that introduces the principles of footwear development, manufacturing and quality assurance to designers, buyers, product developers, sourcing teams, sales personnel and marketers alike.

Together, these programmes help businesses to strengthen technical capability throughout their organisations while supporting professional development across the wider footwear industry.

Independent expertise for a changing industry

The pace of change within the footwear industry continues to accelerate. New materials, circular economy principles, digital product passports, sustainability legislation and increasingly complex global supply chains all present new technical challenges that require informed decision-making.

Responding effectively depends not only on reliable data, but also on the ability to interpret that information within the context of product design, manufacturing processes and intended consumer use. For more than a century, SATRA has combined scientific research with practical footwear expertise to help members navigate these challenges with confidence.

Perhaps this explains why many organisations first approach SATRA for testing but continue their membership for many years afterwards. The enduring value lies not simply in access to laboratories, publications or training, but also in the ability to make use of independent expertise that supports better products, stronger manufacturing, improved quality and informed technical decisions.

As the footwear industry continues to evolve, that combination of knowledge, experience and practical support remains as relevant today as it has ever been.
