The global leather sector has launched a new independent, non-profit body aimed at strengthening collaboration and promoting the material’s future prospects.

The Global Leather Alliance (GLA) was officially launched in Milan on 15th September, with a mission to bring together businesses from across the supply chain to ‘protect, promote and advance the future of leather’. Leading the organisation is Marc Smit, chief executive of leather chemicals specialist Smit & Zoon, who has been appointed as chair. Randy Johnson, chief executive of automotive leather manufacturer Pangea, will serve as Mr Smit’s deputy.

Speaking to senior industry representatives from around the world at the launch event, Mr Smit said that other sectors, including those which are involved in the production of milk and wool, had successfully overcome their competitive differences to unite behind common goals, enabling them to respond more effectively to criticism and communicate a positive message to consumers.

He stated that previous attempts within the leather industry to establish a well-funded organisation with a strong collective voice had fallen short. While there had been a willingness to act, he said the sector lacked the coordination and shared structure needed to make such initiatives successful.

To support its activities, the GLA will seek financial backing from companies throughout the leather industry. Mr Smit stressed that members would be expected to make a meaningful contribution, although not an unlimited commitment.

Headquartered in Brussels, the alliance will use membership funding to support a central organisation as well as regional working groups. Campaign priorities will be determined democratically by members, giving participating organisations a direct role in shaping the GLA’s future activities.
