Nike targets China ‘very aggressively’

Nike President Charlie Denson is ‘very excited’ about opportunities for growth in China.

Nike President Charlie Denson has reportedly announced that the sportswear giant plans to double its sales in the growing Chinese market within the next four years.

“We certainly will continue to invest in China, and very aggressively,” said Mr Denson. “We are very excited about the growth opportunities here.”

The Portland, USA-based company established its operation in China 30 years ago. It took Nike 26 years to reach $1 billion from Chinese sales, but only another four years to double this figure. China is now Nike’s largest market outside the United States. There are now than 7,000 retail stores in China, and Nike now plans to expand product distribution to the western part of the country.

“I think the great thing about sports is that it doesn't matter if you live in Shanghai or Beijing or Wuhan, or wherever, I think you’re still looking for the best and the most innovative products available, and that is what gives us such confidence,” Mr Denson remarked. “We will continue to grow as we move into the lower-tier cities – athletes still want the same products.”
