Factors affecting measurement

Many SATRA reports and calibration certificates quote a value known as ‘uncertainty of measurement’. What does this figure represent, and how should it be applied?

As a general scientific principle, no test or measurement is perfect. There are always variations in the way tests are carried out due to changes in environment, test set up, equipment inaccuracies and human nature, to name just a few of the more obvious situations. This gives rise to what is called an ‘error of measurement’.
