SATRA’s long-running and popular basic shoemaking course is now relaunching with  a revised content to provide a simple guide to the process of manufacturing footwear. This two-day course starts with learning basic shoemaking terminology as well as different footwear styles. We then discuss the various processes used to put the footwear together, focusing on the stages in the stitching and making rooms, the different ways of attaching soles and ancillary actions such as shoe room finishing and inspection.
A review of the key materials used to make footwear will be included, with discussions on upper materials (leathers, synthetics and textiles), sole materials and also components including insoles, toe puffs (box toes) and stiffeners (counters).
Day two begins with a visit to a local shoe factory to observe first-hand the processes that have been learnt. Afterwards, we will return to SATRA to continue the course to examine factors that affect the customer, including fit, comfort and consumer complaints. There will also be a discussion on quality control tests with a tour of the laboratory.
This is an introductory course to the shoemaking process. It is especially suited to those who are new to the industry and want a broad grounding in the topic. Marketing staff, buyers, designers, material suppliers and any other personnel who need an introduction to footwear manufacture would benefit from attending.
The course is open to SATRA members only.
