10:00 GMT
The Scottish Leather Group Ltd pioneered a zero waste strategy and is a leader in the leather industry in the development and achievement of sustainable leather manufacturing – producing their recognised ‘low carbon leather’.
In this workshop guest presenter, Dr Warren Bowden, Innovation and Sustainability Director, will highlight the journey that began over a decade ago towards achieving a sustainable manufacturing cycle.
He will explain how the environmental impact has steadily reduced, avoiding landfill of waste via the development of their Thermal Energy plant which produces both syngas and oil to reduce the primary energy use and carbon footprint; minimisation of the SLG water footprint through advanced effluent treatment and water recycling into production; elimination of the use of compounds of concern via targeted procurement and management and investment to prevent negative offsite local impacts.
There is also the positive impact on local communities and in the workplace that has been achieved with sustained employment, an enviable Health and Safety record and increased Human Capital through welfare improvements, school liaison and an apprenticeship and staff development programme. Operational excellence is driving out wasteful practices and already contributing to manufacturing efficiencies.
The principles discussed will be applicable to any manufacturer.
