‘Box toes’, often called ‘toe puffs’, are components designed to help retain the shape of the front part of footwear. ‘Counters’ , often called stiffeners, are used for the same purpose in the backpart.
SATRA’s Technical Adviser, Tom Bayes, describes the process for assessing the properties of these components and determining whether they will be suitable for use in different footwear styles.
