There is a huge variety of fastening systems that can be used in footwear. The type utilised will depend on many factors, ranging from practical considerations through to the aesthetics, as well as economic considerations.
Mark Southam reviews the key types, including slide fasteners. hooks and loops and buckles, discussing how they work, their design and some of the problems that can occur in their use. He also discusses the important tests that should be used to assess their suitability for use in footwear.
