SAFT USA (Portland, Oregon) Modules 9 and 10
Monday 31st March 2025 to Thursday 3rd April 2025
Successful modern manufacturing processes rely on accurate practical information and the ability of staff to understand and apply such information. In a global and competitive marketplace, knowledge and skills are increasingly important. SATRA has designed the SAFT (Satra Accredited Footwear Technologist) course for all technologists involved in any aspect of footwear production.
This spring we will be presenting our two new modules, each of which is led by SATRA specialists, and subjects are covered in detail during two days of intensive training including comprehensive documentation.
Module 9. Sports footwear
This module examines how the materials, construction and design features of sports footwear are defined by the demands of, and the risks associated with, the sport for which they are to be worn.
Topics covered will include:
• An overview of the sports footwear industry - including a brief history of the development of sports footwear
• Industry trends – a review of industry developments such as the use of digital
technology and ecommerce
• Materials and design - an examination of key material and design trends and
innovations
• Universal properties of sports footwear – including identifying appropriate testing to measure them
• Sports play surfaces – we discuss the influences play surfaces have on sports
footwear design
• Visible technology – what defines this trend?
Module 10. Leather
This module is open to non-members of SATRA
This module will give the learner a broad overview of how leather is made and what is unique about it in comparison to other materials used for making footwear.
Day 1: Understanding, making and using leather
• Raw material defects and characteristics - a review of the damage that can be caused on the farm, in transport and at the slaughter house
• Hide and skin structures - cattle, sheep, goat and pig skins differ in structure, so selection of the raw material for the final end product is essential
• Leather making processes - identification of the key processes and their importance in regards to the properties of the final leather
• Leather identification - understanding internationally recognised descriptions and definitions for different leather types and leather-related materials
Day 2: Selection and use of leather
• Sustainability - is leather a sustainable material?
• Restricted substance testing - discussing international restricted chemicals legislation and brand-specific restricted substance lists
• Testing and specifications - how these can be used to aid product development, routine quality assurance and problem-solving.
• Leather grading - understanding the importance of agreement on the useability of leather between tannery and product manufacturer
• Investigating leather problems - examples of typical consumer complaints
Modules are normally priced at 1,200 GBP each, but the introductory price for modules 9 and 10 is 995 GBP each.
