Increased surface scanning capability
SATRA continues to invest in 3D scanning
26th February 2019
SATRA can now take detailed measurements of the surface topography of products to an accuracy of 0.03mm. 3D scans of both simple and complex objects can be made in a matter of minutes.
Such scanning capability allows comparisons to be made between new and tested samples, for example between unweathered and weathered materials and components. Lasts can be scanned to compare their shape and dimensions to the CAD files from which they were created, and moulded products can be scanned to compare their shape and dimensions to a scan of the mould in which it was made. The potential offered by the 3D scanner for reverse engineering also makes it useful for the production of bespoke test equipment and other items.
3D scanning is a developing technology but has already met a number of needs within SATRA and the footwear industry. As interest and applications for the technology continue to increase it looks set to be a tool that is very much in demand.
