SATRA to hold SCIP webinar

SATRA will be hosting a webinar on Thursday 15th April focussing on the EU’s SCIP database.

8th April 2021

There will be sessions at 10:00 and 16:00 BST, both free of charge, exclusively for SATRA members.

The SCIP (Substances of Concern In articles as such or in complex objects (Products) Database) was established by the European Union under the Waste Framework Directive in order to record information on substances of very high concern in products.

This is done to decrease generation of hazardous waste, assist operatives in improving their waste treatment operations, to allow authorities to monitor the use of SVHCs, as well as to aid consumers in making informed choices about products they purchase. If you or your business supplies/produces an article containing >0.1% w/w onto the EU market you must submit this information to the database.

Once a substance of very high concern (SVHC) from the candidate list has been identified in a product, there is a now an obligation to inform ECHA (European Chemicals Agency) of this by submitting a notification to the SCIP database. SVHC’s include substances on the candidate list under REACH.

In this session Jade Hurley, one of SATRA’s chemical technologists, will discuss the background of the SCIP database, with a practical focus on what the obligations are and who is responsible for reporting to it. We will also detail how to make a SCIP notification and what information is required to do so.
