SATRA Test Method revisions (August 2021)

Updated Test Methods include TM80, TM173 and TM425.

The following Test Methods have been updated:

TM80:1992 – ‘Transverse tensile strength of sheet materials’ has been republished as TM80:2021. This method is intended to determine the transverse, Z direction, tensile strength of a material. The test is carried out with both wet and dry specimens. The method is mainly applicable to fibre-based or laminated materials, such as insole materials.

The revision has ensured that SATRA TM80 reflects SATRA’s current procedures and formatting, as well as to improve usability. A Health and Safety statement has been included along with an updated list of equipment and details within the preparation and procedure have been clarified.

TM185:1995 – ‘Colour fastness to water spotting of leathers, textiles and coated fabrics’ has been republished as TM185:2021 – ‘Resistance to water spotting of leathers, textiles and coated fabrics’. This method is intended to determine the resistance of a material to spotting by water. Effects such as marking, staining, blistering and colour change are assessed.

The title and scope have been updated to clarify the intention of the test method. Further updates to the equipment, conditioning requirements and a more detailed procedure are now in place. The revision has also ensured that SATRA TM185 reflects SATRA’s current procedures and formatting, as well as to improve usability.

TM173:1995 – ‘Colour fastness to rubbing – reciprocating method’ has been republished as TM173:2021. This method is intended to assess the degree of damage (marring) and/or transfer of surface colour from a material during mild dry or wet abrasion. The method is mainly applicable to leather but can be used to assess other materials such as plastics and textiles.

The revision has ensured that SATRA TM173 reflects SATRA’s current procedures and formatting, as well as to improve usability. Updates have been made to the list of equipment, along with an improved figure and clarification of the preparation and test method procedure.

TM414:1992 – ‘Preparation of hot melt bonded assemblies for peel tests’ has been republished as TM414:2021. This method is intended to describe the preparation and bonding, with hot melt adhesives, of test specimen assemblies for use in peel tests. The method is applicable to all types of material, provided at least one of the adherends is flexible.

The revision has ensured that SATRA TM414 reflects SATRA’s current procedures and formatting, as well as to improve usability. An improved cover photo and the modernisation of the current figures and inclusion of 2 new figures serve as an additional visual aid for the user.

TM425:1999 – ‘Peel Strength of laminated fabrics’ has been republished as TM425:2021. This method is intended to determine the peel strength of bonds between layers of laminated fabrics. The method is particularly applicable to the assessment of laminated garment fabrics and fusible interlinings but can also be used for home-furnishing materials and toys which incorporate laminated fabric structures.

The revision has ensured that SATRA TM425 reflects SATRA’s current procedures and formatting, as well as to improve usability. References have been brought up to date and clarification of equipment and specimen preparation have been made.
