Updates to the EN1186 test method series for food contact compliance

The EN 1186 series of test methods for materials and articles in contact with food had been in place for 20 years until an update was published in 2022.

This update consolidates some of the individual parts together and in this webinar Lorna Harding, technologist team leader in the chemistry team, explains the changes to the test method and how this impacts products that claim compliance for contact with food such as PPE gloves, plastic packaging and homeware items.

Torque and rotation in footwear: Schawbel member showcase

Sam Huzzard, technical lead of SATRA's innovation team, commences this webinar with an introduction to the concept of rotational slip. He explains how SATRA measures torque through the footwear that occurs when we change direction. Consideration is given to the way the body works with standard footwear when trying to deal with the forces involved.

SATRA member, Schawbel Technologies, is collaborating with inventor Philip Muirhead who joins us to detail his invention. This is a mechanism built into footwear that demonstrates the ability to offload torsional forces.

Introduction to product carbon footprint and lifecycle assessment

SATRA's sustainability manager, Nicola Pichel-Juan, explains why it is important for organisations to understand the environmental impacts of their products. She introduces lifecycle assessment (LCA) methodology and explains the type of data that would be needed in order to calculate the impacts of a given product.

Key challenges typically encountered in the process are discussed as well as commonly used methodologies.

Exploring SATRA's research facilities and expertise

Research and innovation at SATRA has been a priority since the organisation was founded in 1919 and has continuously played a key part in the technical progression of footwear related industries. Throughout SATRA has remained at the cutting edge of research with investment into exciting projects and technologies to the benefit of our members.

Innovation technologist Ben McMorran gives an insight into the department's current developments and explains how SATRA members can utilise the expertise and facilities available to their advantage.

Permeation testing against chemotherapy drugs

Healthcare professionals handling chemotherapy drugs must wear protective gloves that are proven to provide adequate protection against the drugs they are using. A key property is the glove’s resistance to permeation – whether the drug will permeate through the material at the molecular level.

SATRA is now able to test a limited range of chemotherapy drugs in accordance to the permeation test method ASTM D6978-05 (2019). In this webinar presentation, Lorna Harding explains the test method and details the specific drugs that can be tested at SATRA.

Testing and certification of motorcycle footwear

In our webinar, Hannah Coe and Daniel Cotter discuss the testing and certification requirements for motorcycle footwear. Some of the required testing includes an assessment of the upper and the types of seam constructions. There are tests on the integrity of the whole boot, including measurement of the bond strength between the upper and outsole and testing to assess the transverse rigidity of the boot.

Included in the webinar is an overview of the certification process, to include CE and UKCA.

Common failures in safety footwear

In order to effectively and consistently give the necessary level of protection, safety footwear must be carefully designed and manufactured. Making a thorough consideration of both the design and materials to be used during the product’s development stage can save time and money when it comes to testing and certification. Darren Roberts and Hannah Coe from SATRA's footwear team discuss the common causes for failure.

Footwear protecting against chemicals

In this webinar, Lorna Harding from SATRA’s chemistry team and Hannah Coe from the footwear team discuss the requirements and test methods outlined in EN 13832:2018 Parts 1, 2 and 3. This standard is relevant to all footwear that comes into contact with chemicals and defines the requirements for short-term and long-term exposure to chemicals.

Test methods including splashing resistance, chemical permeation and degradation, elongation at break and tear resistance are also discussed.

Sustainability workshop on organisational carbon footprint

SATRA's sustainability manager, Nicola Pichel-Juan, discusses why it is important for organisations to understand their carbon emissions and how the emissions can be quantified – while sharing SATRA's journey so far to calculate our own organisational carbon footprint.

Nicola is joined by Vanessa Macalliver from xtonnes, an organisation that provides a carbon management software platform that supports organisations to measure their impacts and set reduction targets.
