Test Method: SATRA TM259

Determination of resistance to water penetration - hydrostatic pressure test

December 2007

SCOPE

This test method is intended to determine the resistance of materials to penetration by water. It is primarily intended for fabrics and coated fabrics e.g. waterproof fabrics, tentings and tarpaulins but also may be used for leather. The method also may be applied to seams.

PRINCIPLE

A test specimen is subjected to a steadily increasing hydrostatic pressure on one face, under standard conditions, until penetration occurs in three places. The hydrostatic pressure at which the water penetrates the material at the third place is recorded as a measure of the resistance to the passage of water through the material or seam.
