Test Method: SATRA TM304

Qualitative tests for soluble colour in upper and lining materials

February 2023

SCOPE

This method is intended to determine qualitatively whether or not a material will lose colour in wear, leading to either a change in colour of the material itself or the staining of a material with which it is in contact. It is mainly applicable to leather but may be used for other upper and lining materials, see clause 8.1.

PRINCIPLE

Test specimens are extracted with boiling solutions of water and toluene, see clause 8.2. Artificial perspiration can be used as an additional extraction liquid. The extent of the colour changes of the liquids is used as a qualitative guide as to whether or not the material will lose colour in wear.
