Test Method: SATRA TM123

Closure strength of touch and close fasteners

January 2018

SCOPE

This method is intended to determine both the peel and shear strengths of touch and close fasteners. The loss of strength after repeated use is also assessed. The method is applicable to all types of touch and close fasteners supplied on a roll and also those forming part of completed footwear.

PRINCIPLE

2.1 Method 1 Peel strength

Both parts of a touch and close fastener are pressed together under controlled conditions. The average force required to peel them apart along their length from either end is measured with a tensile testing machine. This procedure is then repeated with the one of the parts of the fastener turned through 180°.

2.2 Method 2 Peel strength after repeated opening and closing

A touch and close fastener is repeatedly opened and closed along its length by a machine. The peel strength is then measured by repeating the test procedures described in section 2.1

2.3 Method 3 Shear strength

Both parts of a touch and close fastener are pressed together under controlled conditions with one of the parts offset to the other so that there is a standard contact area between the two parts. The maximum shear force required to pull them apart along their length in both directions is measured with a tensile testing machine. This procedure is then repeated with one of parts of the fastener turned through 180°.

2.4 Method 4 Shear strength after repeated opening and closing

A touch and close fastener is repeatedly opened and closed along its length by a machine. The shear strength is then measured by repeating the test procedures described in section 2.3.

2.5 Method 5 Peel strength of fasteners attached to footwear

A touch and close fastener, together with the part of the footwear to which it is attached, is cut from the completed footwear. The peel strength of the fastener is then measured in the direction in which failure is most likely in typical wear.

2.6 Method 6 Shear strength of fasteners attached to footwear

A touch and close fastener, together with the part of the footwear to which it is attached, is cut from the completed footwear. The shear strength of the fastener is then measured in the direction in which failure is most likely in typical wear.
