Test Method: SATRA TM179

Tear strength - wing rip method

January 1996

SCOPE

This method is intended to determine the force required to tear a material. The method is mainly applicable to non-leather footwear upper and lining materials but can be used with all types of thin flexible material.

PRINCIPLE

A test specimen, which has a single slit in it to produce two legs, is positioned in a tensile testing machine so that the slit is at 90° to the axis of the machine. The test specimen is deformed to separate the legs and one leg clamped in each jaw. The jaws are moved apart to tear the material until the tear has propagated to an edge of the test specimen. The average force required to propagate the tear, the type of tear and the thickness of the test specimen are recorded.
