Test Method: SATRA TM35

Static friction material test

December 2019

SCOPE

This method is intended to determine the coefficient of static friction between two surfaces.

The method is particularly applicable to measurement of friction between footwear counter lining materials and standard hose material (method 1), the stiction between two pieces of footwear upper material (method 2) or the slip resistance of babies’ pram shoe soles (method 3), but it may be used to assess any type of sheet material.

PRINCIPLE

A test specimen attached to the underside of a moveable rigid sled of known mass is placed on a second test specimen or reference material mounted on a horizontal fixed base. A gradually increasing horizontal force is applied to the sled until it starts to move. The force required to start the movement is measured and the coefficient of static friction calculated.

Footwear applications:

Method 1 – is particularly relevant to testing internal heel grip between footwear counter lining materials and the hose covered foot. The counter lining material is attached to the sled and a reference standard hose material is attached to the fixed base.

Method 2 – is particularly relevant to testing for stiction between upper materials on opposing left/right feet as one shoe swings against the other in walking. Stiction is most likely to occur with patent leather, PVC and other high gloss upper materials, potentially leading to tripping or stumbling. The upper material is attached to the sled and a second piece of the same material is laid over a convoluted mounting attached to the fixed base.

Method 3 – may be used to test the static friction properties of babies’ hosiery or pram shoe soling materials. The hosiery or soling material is attached to a modified sled and a reference standard flooring material is attached to the fixed base.
